Kate Sessions Statue

A statue honoring Kate Sessions' contribution toward the development of Balboa Park and the beatification of San Diego stands near the Laurel Street entrance to the park among some of the trees that she planted. The sculpture, created by Native San Diegan, Ruth Hayward, is cast from silicon bronze and placed in a landscaped and lighted setting at the southwest corner of Sefton Plaza. The landscaping will reflect Kate's concept of gardening: she liked to use natural settings, using a variety of plants and rock.

Mounted on a two-foot high pedestal, the six and half foot high figure of Kate Sessions surveys the park she loved, advocated, and helped develop. The statue depicts Kate as she is seen in photographs around 1910: long flowing skirt, shirtwaist, and hat. She has a trowel in one hand, a seedling she is about to plant in the other, and a basket of seedlings at her feet. She is posed in a welcoming gesture, inviting you to join her in her garden.

The statue of Kate Sessions should offer inspiration because of her goodness, talent, individuality, and dedication to the betterment of the San Diego community in which she lived and worked.
