Color, culture and creativity highlight the first-ever flower extravaganza in San Diego's Balboa Park. For the entire month of April 1998, Balboa Park will be aflame with the brilliant colors of over 50,000 blossoms, during its first annual Buds 'n Blooms! A Floral Fiesta celebration.
The myriad plantings put in by the Park and Recreation Department will be at the height of their beauty during the month of April, with floral offerings of every sort, from the bold and the beautiful to the delicate and demure. The award-winning Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden will be in bloom, and the newly reconstructed Alcazar Garden will be filled with vibrant seasonal blooms. There will also be free tours of some of the Park's renowned horticultural wonders.
Over 85 Park organizations are taking part in this fiesta. The April 1st kick-off event will be the unveiling of a statue of Kate O. Sessions. Other activities throughout the month include flower shows, arranging demonstrations, floral-themed dance and musical concerts, puppet shows and puppet-making workshops, wildflower tours, flower photography field trips, topiary exhibits and demonstrations.
Throughout the Park, carts will sell fresh flowers, and experts in various areas of horticulture will offer advice and tips on successful plant culture and care. The grand finale of Buds 'n Blooms! is the magnificent Art Alive floral exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art, where floral designers interpret works of art from the museum's permanent collection with flowers and other plant materials.
Buds 'n Blooms! promises to be full of exciting and educational activities for kids, families, and seniors. Check the full calendar of events and the list of special exhibits for more information. A calender will also be available in the Balboa Park Visitors Center.
