  • Saturday, July 17, 9 to 10:30 a.m.: THE NITTY GRITTY ON SOIL
    For children ages 6-9. $10 per person. It's alive! Kids discover Soil Secrets and learn how plants, farmers and gardeners depend on soil teaming with life.

  • Saturday, July 17, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: PEST MANAGEMENT FOR SMART GARDENERS
    For adults. $12 per person. Meet tiny garden heroes and learn how to keep beneficial bugs healthy, happy and abundant.

  • Saturday, July 24, 9 to 10:30 a.m.: WHAT'S BUGGING YOU?
    For children ages 6 to 9. $10 per person. A kindly introduction to creepy crawlies: good and bad bugs, plus worms and other squirmers.

  • Saturday, July 24, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: GROW FRAGRANT, SAVORY HERBS
    For adults. $12 per person. Learn how to start seeds and cuttings, optimize growing conditions, and how to harvest and store herbs for scent and cuisine.

  • Saturday, July 31, 9 to 10:30 a.m.: THE SCOOP ON PEANUTS
    For children ages 6-9. $10 per person. Are they nuts or peas? The Mayans ate them, and kids today adore PB&J. Learn the weird way peanuts grow and take home your own peanut.

  • Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: SEXUAL AND ASEXUAL PROPAGATION
    For adults. $12 per person. All you ever wanted to know about growing new plants from existing ones. Learn Tammy's tips for seed saving and starting, plus division, cuttings and layering.

    The Del Mar Fair will be open from June 16th through July 5th. Check the schedule of gardening-oriented presentations and events and time your visit to the Fair to coincide with the event or talk of your choice.

    This Saturday, May 15, the Cuyamaca College Horticulture program will be holding their 5th Annual Spring Garden Festival. Don't miss the 10am Opening Celebration of the new Water Conservation Garden.

    Don't miss the Alpine Sage & Songbirds Festival, this weekend, May 1-2, in downtown historic Alpine.

    Also this weekend, the Carlsbad African Violet Society is presenting: "Violets In The Orient" -- The 4th annual african violet judged show and sale. Just in time for Mother's Day!

    This Sunday, April 25, Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside will be hosting Pepper Tree Day. Learn about environmental concerns and horticulture. Listen to special guest lectures by regional experts and visit the Country Garden Plant Sale.

    Don't miss the Spring Home/Garden Show this weekend, April 9-11. A large annual event, this year, the show is sponsored by the San Diego Horticultural Society. Display gardens, information booths, plant sales, demonstrations from over twenty San Diego gardening related organizations, and all sorts of entertaining and educational seminars.

    The annual San Diego Home Gardening Seminar conducted by the San Diego Master Gardeners and the UC Cooperative Extension is being held March 27, 1999. A program and registration form is available. Classes fill quickly so register early for the best selection.

    Catharine Vinson would like to extend an invitation to all our readers to participate in the 1999 Internet Tomato Trials. This is a strictly non-commercial event. Gardeners from around the world are taking part in this trial of over 600 varieties of open-pollinated, heirloom, and hybrid tomatoes. Participants will be sent packets of seeds to grow. If you are interested in participating, submit your request early - the rolls for the spring trials will close on February 1.
