GrapesMost of the grapes grown in California belong to the European types (Vitis vinifera) and are most at home in the warm valleys. The hardy eastern varieties (Vitis labrusca) are the most satisfactory for planting near the coast or in the mountains. To protect ripening grapes from birds, enclose half-grown clusters in paper bags.
